Concealed carry permittee shoots attacker twice during ‘Knockout Game’

A man in Lansing, Michigan, was waiting at a bus stop for his six-year-old daughter when he was attacked by a teenager in a game called “Point-em-out, Knock-em-out.” Unlike other recent “knockout” attacks in Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. — the man chosen to be attacked had a concealed carry permit and his gun handy, and shot the attacker twice.

“I saw the van circle twice and the second time three came out. I didn’t suspect anything. I hadn’t any enemies, or any reason to believe they would be looking to do anything to me,” the “victim” told local news station WILX. “He shoved something into my side. I wasn’t sure what it was. It had some force to it. I wasn’t sure if it was a knife or a gun.”

The man then pulled out his gun and shot 17-year-old Marvell Weaver — who claims he now regrets doing what he did. “It was just a lesson learned. I wish I hadn’t played the game at all,” Weaver said.

He admitted this wasn’t the first time he’s played the game.

“Not many, six or seven. It wouldn’t be an every day game, just a certain game to be played on certain days. You don’t even try to rob them or anything. That’s the game.”

Weaver also said that teens play the game because they’re bored, and it’s not gang related. They were inspired by watching others on the internet successfully getting away with it.

Officer Robert Merritt with the Lansing police department said this goes to show there’s a price to play for people who take part in it.

“There’s a price to pay if they wind up doing it. A good example is Marvell Weaver,” Merritt said of the “game.”

And so the karma begins. I look forward to more and more knockout game contestants being shot, preferably right between the eyes next time.

    • Chemman01

That would depend on the laws of self defense in the particular state. In my state you can only shoot in the area between the shoulders and the hips. That region is not considered to be shooting to kill.

      • LibertysSon

        What state is that?

        • Chemman01

          Arizona.

      • Nitro

Can you please cite the statute/law or case law for your claim please? We would all be interested in being more educated.

        Thank you.

        • Chemman01

          Nitro,
Going off what my CCW instructors taught for the State of Arizona. I can not speak to what the rules for other states are. I actually asked the instructors if they were joking, they weren’t. When I said if I fired a 185 grain 45 hollow point in that area in all probability the perp would die. They answered that I was correct but the state required us to only aim for that area. Shooting someone in the legs, arms or head would get you put on trial for shooting to kill.

          • Nitro

I see no statutory requirement that you shoot only between the shoulder and hips, and am not aware of any case law in support of this position. IDK where the “instructor” got his info, but without verification you are doing nothing more than spread rumor that may get people in trouble.

My suggestion to all, get info from AZ DOJ or a criminal lawyer before taking any lay person’s advice as to proper use of force.

          • Chemman01

Since my CCW was a Police trainer also I have no reason to disbelieve what he said. And yes I have looked at the actual statutes. As in all uses of force you are required to use the least amount to stop the action.

          • Nitro

Well, good luck to you if you ever get into a use of force incident. I personally would not trust the advice of a police officer or a “police trainer”. Like I said above, get info from those that know, prosecutor, criminal defense attorney, etc.

As to your second statement, it is overly simplistic from a legal standpoint. Study Title 13 of the Arizona Criminal Code, Chapter 4.

          • CJ

I understood it differently. If you were attempting to shoot to wound then you did not sufficiently fear for your life and so should not have been using deadly force.

          • Chemman01

            CJ,
The idea is to shoot to stop if that is lethal it is authorized under Arizona Revised Statutes. Shooting to kill is a different bird.

          • bjedwards

always “shoot to kill” and aim for center mass

          • Edward Przydzial

dad said a gun is not a toy. you never point a weapon at anyone unless you intend to shoot them and make sure to do what you have to do to STOP them. if they die from being ventilated it is their own fault. lead poisoning is the best remedy for violent savages. look at chicago or detroit to see gun play is usually their game… when the gun is turned on them it’s no one’s fault but their own. all of you idiots defending violating our 2nd amendment need to come live in detroit for a few weeks and see how that turns out. ;)

          • CommonSense

I think you should review everything the guy told you. This is preposterous. “Please stand still, I need to shoot you but I want to make sure I’m on target so it won’t be considered murder!” If you need to use deadly force you need DEADLY FORCE. You need it because your life, or that of another is in danger of being wrongfully taken. In the heat of a deadly confrontation you will probably be lucky to actually hit the target without a lot of training – and remember to keep your finger OFF the trigger until just before you actually need to fire. That is one thing you should have learned in your course. If you are a woman or over 40, the knock out game is probably a deadly encounter. If your neck is not broken, you can split your head open in the fall, but certainly anyone attacking you that way who also has a weapon, isn’t playing a game. He may be preparing to stab or shoot you or the police if he has a close encounter when they come to your aid.

          • Peckerwood

What, pray tell, is the point of shooting someone if forced to do so?

        • LongPurple

Never, never, never “shoot to kill”.
Only “shoot to SAVE a life”. That would be your life or that of another innocent party. Whatever misfortune happens to befall the criminal who committed violence against others is his own fault, be it injury or death.

          • CommonSense

That is a very good way to put it. It reminds me of the NRA statement that the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.

          • Edward Przydzial

            moron.

          • justsaynotosocialism

            Faggot.

          • Vueiy

Actually, it’s good that he’s learned his lesson, especially if he can convince others not to do the same stupid, foolish, evil things he did.

      • Hazel Motes

It’s amazing how much law is from baseball. You’ve just basically described the strike zone. And everyone’s heard of the “three strikes” law. Abner Doubleday may very well be the most influential person in American jurisprudence, without even meaning to.

  • Micky Baker

Uhhh, where are their parents? One year is not nearly enough. Next time, the hard 40.

  • Rob

The attacker is still alive? Should have shot him a couple more times. Worthless scumbag.

    • Edward Przydzial

      empty the weapon. make sure.

  • ٩๏̯͡๏۶

Surprised they didn’t try to make an example out of the guy that was defending himself by pushing their anti gun agenda and trying to prosecute him.

    • jacobkepler

That would put them in a quandary. They’re trying to suppress the fact that this racist “game” exists, so to start an anti-gun tirade would necessarily expose the existence of it, as well as the ongoing coverup efforts.

In this case, anti-gun agenda < race-protection agenda.

    • Edward Przydzial

give them time to seek for a way to do this… let’s wait and see… ;) ask george zimmerman how they work that out.

  • Seriously?

Your lede needs a little work:

A WHITE man in Lansing, Michigan was waiting at a bus stop for his six-year-old daughter when he was attacked by a BLACK teenager in a “GAME” called “Point-em-out, Knock-em-out.” Unlike other recent BLACK “knockout” attacks in Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. — the WHITE man chosen to be attacked had a concealed carry permit and his gun handy, and shot the BLACK attacker twice.

“GAME” should be in quotes. If I murder people but I call it a game, is it a game? No, the majority of people would say that’s not a game. So unless we’re letting thugs define the terms now, I would really put that in quotes. Just my 2 cents.

    • Edward Przydzial

thugs in washington are re-defining all of our laws as they violate (constitution) them and eric holder refuses to enforce them. ;)

  • kid_you_not

Nice continued coverup of how this is Blacks attacking Whites. No hate crime charges, either. Let’s see the same game played by Whites targeting Blacks and if the media treats it differently it will prove beyond a doubt what we all know. So, we have 10 years of media silence as we attack Blacks, right?

    • David

As Martin Luther King Jr. would have said it, To decide a persons worth as a target for harm based on nothing more than the color of their skin is reprehensible and should not be condoned. Neither is it right to retaliate on others as a response to to such senseless violence.

      • unadorned

Like Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Give my people reparations.”

        • David

How funny you should make such a statement, in our present age of the
internet: If someone famous said it, it can be found on the web. In this
case, I find nothing, (NOTHING), in support of your assertion that MLK
said Blacks should receive, or are entitled to, reparations.

Generations removed, it makes no sense at all: There are none living today who
owned any slaves and, there are none living who were slaves. Repay who?
          Attainder is unconstitutional, BTW

          • David

MLK never called for reparations. That’s an invention of the post-MLK ‘civil rights/grievance industry’ of which AG Holder is a bona fide member in good standing.

          • CommonSense

I want reparations for my grandfathers and grandmothers who came to the US and were mistreated for 30 years. I also want a meeting with the Germans about some debts they owe the family, and after that I want to be paid by the Huns who sacked my homeland. Reparations form the Persians, Africans (Sicily), and a doctor or two are also on the list. We should all do our genealogy and send the liberals a bill.

          • Edward Przydzial

sir… you are a fool. martin luther king was a card carrying communist/socialist. listen to his speeches you jackass.

        • Edward Przydzial

          socialist.

    • jacobkepler

Of course not. The first time there’s a white teenager hitting a black person, the media would explode in a manufactured firestorm of rage. Come on, they even made a whole new ethnic category for Zimmerman – no one’s ever seen or heard of a “White Hispanic” before, but the media made a miracle happen. Word wizards, every last one of them.

      • CommonSense

I wouldn’t call them word wizards. Journalists are primarily low cognition humans primarily focused on vanity with limited redeeming value. That is why they want to write about things. They can’t actually “DO” anything, but they have active imaginations.

      • Edward Przydzial

lol… the media are TRASH. racists. progressive liars and media manipulators. there is no such thing as a “white hispanic”. why we let them get away with this… ridiculous.

    • Edward Przydzial

media has denied the truth and covered it up or refused to report it or the facts. times are changing and the criminals are going to have a problem on their hands… americans have taken enough.

  • Denver Goddess

It jess be a lesson lurn an sheeut.
Well effin brilliant. This guy will be the next Einstein.

  • Timothy Yakich

The democratic party has taken up Romans 1 as their political platform…this kind of thing (the knockout game) will not only continue, but it will escalate into worse things as time goes on. That is the fate of this country where so-called Christians vote in those who pass laws that go directly against what God teaches in the Bible. (On-demand abortion, gay “marriage”, etc.) The youth of this country are left to their debased minds because of the sins of their parents. America is going down the path that disobedience brings. We need strong Christian men to turn this country into a God-fearing, Jesus-following country. He is our only hope.

    • Beaglescout

The real problems are the last hundred years’ destruction of the economy and laws that keep children imprisoned in terrible schools well past the date they are physically adult. I don’t think 6 year olds should be sent down into coal mines rather than being allowed to learn reading, writing, arithmetic, and (real) history, but neither should they be forced to take a single social studies or health studies class ever, or be required to sit through an in-school study hall. If these bored kids had a legitimate way to make money at a job, they would have a reason to work.

      • Hazel Motes

Kick ‘em out of school and put ‘em to work, that’s the solution! We need a permanent underclass in this country. Maybe we should have a King, too, since that’s worked out so well for every other country.

        • disqus_v3SHzvCspj

If we had a king we would hang him……….Oh, Wait.

          • Edward Przydzial

            barry soetoro is king.

        • CommonSense

You need to look around. We already have a permanent under class, and you are part of it. In 1750 a man and a woman could build a home, heat it, raise a family, and feed themselves with their own hands. Today we have electric power, internal combustion engines, technology, motors, vehicles, machinery and even robotics. One man can produce enough food in a day to feed a small city. Where does all that extra productivity go? Look around.

          • Hazel Motes

I was being sarcastic, but you are absolutely correct. We are all in the 99%. So-called “middle class” people are barely above the level of “poor people.”

      • Edward Przydzial

lay of the weed… it’s laced with acid.

    • Hazel Motes

If God didn’t destroy America over the genocide of the Native Americans or the enslavement of black people, he isn’t going to give a rat’s tail about abortion or gay marriage. I don’t know what it will take to get God’s attention, but I suspect nothing human beings are capable of.

      • disqus_v3SHzvCspj

Americans didn’t ‘enslave’ anyone, they did however purchase them but most came in the 17th and 18th centuries, even before the USA was founded. The international slave trade was outlawed in the early 19th centuries, and few if any freed slaves after the Civil War were born in Africa.

        • Hazel Motes

That’s just semantics. They were not freed and given their back pay; the fact that they were not captured and brought over here after 1808 does not negate the fact that they were kept as slaves after that date. Even by your definition, they were “enslaved” between 1776 and 1808.

          • Mel Content

Go take that up with your beloved Democrat party that supported slavery. Maybe they can pay reparations from their own campaign funds.

          • Hazel Motes

You should go to the Tea Party for that. All of the racist Southern Democrats switched over to the GOP when the Civil Rights Act was passed.

          • marylamb72

            KKK founded by Democrats
Civil Rights Act fought by Democrats
            Desegregation fought by Democrats
First gun control law by Democrats to keep freed slaves defenseless
First minimum wage law by Democrats at the behest of Unions(some things never change) to force blacks out of railroad jobs.
Genocide of black babies by Planned Parenthood supported by Democrats
Which group is REALLY racist. The one that believes blacks are too stupid and lazy to get into college or get a job without whiteys help or the group that believes blacks are JUST as smart and competent?

          • Hazel Motes

And 100% of those racist white southern Democrats switched to the GOP after the Civil Rights Act was passed. You see Confederate flags at Tea Party rallies, not Occupy events. All you people have is your lies about the past. You forgot to crow and beat your chest over the fact that Lincoln was a Republican. If Lincoln was alive today, you people would make him vomit.

          • marylamb72

Yes you do see an occasional confederate flag at Tea Party rallies and I think they should have the slop beaten out of them.. THEN those liberal trolls would stop doing that.
Affirmative Action is the most racist law passed. YOU liberals who believe blacks are too stupid and lazy to get into college or get a job without YOUR(whiteys) help. Of course since you have convinced them that the genocide of their children is a GOOD thing you’ll have fewer and fewer going.

          • Edward Przydzial

occupy a brain you fucktard. the confederate flag is not a racist symbol as democrats claim. the kkk is democrats. now go eat your bowl of vomit.

          • @playbyplayman

Keep trying, sunshine. Facts and reality may someday find their way into your thought process. I doubt it, but it’s worth hoping for.

          • Hazel Motes

So the Ku Klux Klan, today, is composed 100% of Democrats?

Don’t worry, the LSD will wear off in 10-12 hours.

          • @playbyplayman

Well, it’s pretty obvious with inane (you can look it up) comments like that you’re simply trolling this board, so I’ll only respond long enough (on the off chance there’s someone out there who hasn’t figured you out yet) to let you know that Robert Byrd (D) called, and he’d like to discuss some things with you.

          • Hazel Motes

Robert Byrd apologized at least a thousand times for his youthful membership in the Klan, you lying scumbag. When has any Republican ever apologized for their own stupid behavior.

          • CommonSense

Exactly how do you know? Do you have any evidence? Most of them could not sign for their pay regardless. I admit that the Democrats attempted to keep them as slaves or partial humans after the civil war. Perhaps they still feel guilty. It might be a good thing to have today’s democrats pay blacks who can prove their heritage from their campaign budgets, but that would start a precedent. If politicians had to pay for the damage they cause, they’d all be on street corners holding tin cups!

          • Hazel Motes

Except all of the racist white Southern Democrats switched over to the GOP after the Civil Rights Act was passed. So maybe the Tea Party can pay reparations.

The parties of today are not the parties of even 100 years ago. Republicans like Teddy Roosevelt and William Howard Taft considered themselves “progressives,” so that party changed as well.

          • dauchshundsrule

Hazel you are an idiot. If you are so hot about this issue, talk to the Muslims. They are by far, and have been throughout history, the largest group of slavers in the world.

          • Hazel Motes

They have slaves today, but that doesn’t mean that other people haven’t had slaves in the past, or that the legacy of that injustice doesn’t have any effect in the present day.

Are you also saying that KKK members today are Democrats? Because 100% of them are Republicans. You can only go so far with claiming Abe Lincoln as one of your own and gloating over the fact that up to 50 years ago, the South was Democratic. Too bad it isn’t today; we’d have a Democratic-controlled House, too.

          • dauchshundsrule

Look, many former “slave-owners” also risked their lives helping the Underground Railroad. Many continued their relationship with “their” slaves by keeping them on, as paid employees. I doubt many of them cared about partisanship-I suspect it had more to do with staying afloat financially (or their “bottom line” if they were wealthy land owners) The long and short of it, the boy in this story was a bored, spoiled brat. I try not to have anything to do with KKK; they are a boil on the butt of this country, whatever their political affiliation may currently be.

          • moebob

You know what…….very few AMERICANS were “slave owners”. WHY DON’T YOU READ BOOKS ON U.S. HISTORY. IT TELLS ABOUT MANY IMMIGRANTS WHO WHERE SOLD INTO INDENTURED SERVITUDE. IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT BLACK PEOPLE. ALSO, MANY TRIBAL MEMBERS FROM AFRICA SOLD THEIR OWN PEOPLE INTO SLAVERY. QUIT BLAMING WHITE PEOPLE. READ AND LEARN. THAT’S JUST PLAIN STUPIDITY.
IT’S PEOPLE LIKE YOU THAT KEEP FANNING THE FLAMES OF HATRED AND BIGOTRY.

          • marylamb72

            BS
I think YOU are the biggest racist on this board!

          • marylamb72

Which group is REALLY racist. The one that believes blacks are too stupid and lazy to get into college or get a job without whiteys help or the group that believes blacks are JUST as smart and competent?

          • Edward Przydzial

hazel… you tool. progressives are liberal democrats. communists. jackasses… carpet bagging scum bags. sexual deviants and thieves. they only exist to ruin or destroy this nation.

          • Edward Przydzial

our prison system and welfare has covered the so called ‘reparations’ you claim whites owe. what an idiot. america has paid a heavy price for having these savages/parasites here.

I too am surprised he can still talk after taking two .40 S&Ws. Perhaps a .45ACP or a .44 Spl in a Bulldog loaded hot.

    • CommonSense

You’ve got the wrong attitude. You should use a .40/.45 because it is less likely to penetrate and injure another person, and hollow points simply make it more likely that another person will not be harmed. The very last thing you want on your conscience is that an innocent person got injured or killed because of accidental penetration. Gunfights are very dangerous events, and you want to do everything you can to protect people who might be in the area if the worst ever happens. Considering the ballistics is part of your concern for safety. A .22 is deadly. But it can easily penetrate and still be deadly, and it has a tendency to be deflected by bone or cartilage and take an exit path unrelated to the firing trajectory. These issues are not generally present with a large heavy bullet, especially a hollow point.

      • dauchshundsrule

Seems HHS and DHS has most of the hollow points in the country now.

  • bjedwards

Shame that this punk is not dead.. Good work to the victim. Everyone needs concealed carry in this country thanks to the criminal regime of Obama and its incitement of hate crimes.

black youth have no respect and a nasty hatred for whites… taught this from the cradle they do what they do until they get shot or killed, ask trayvon martin about how his attack turned out. you get what you deserve and we are seeing a rise in home invasions and strong armed robbery… black violence on whites is either being ignored or race is not part of the media news reports. this has to stop. if it doesn’t the good folk who are legally able to own firearms will defend and protect themselves. even steven. karma bites you in the ass.

  • justsaynotosocialism

…just one more well-placed shot from another Trayvon…a tragic story.
